What a complete egress installation includes

Egress window size rules at a glance

Under the 2021 International Residential Code with Washington amendments, the open window needs at least 5.7 sq ft of net clear opening (grade-floor openings may be 5.0 sq ft), 24 in of clear height, 20 in of clear width, and a sill no higher than 44 in above the floor. Meeting the 20 in and 24 in minimums at the same time still isn't enough to reach 5.7 sq ft, so check the manufacturer's clear-opening figure.

What is outside your basement wall?

A deck, patio, narrow side yard, downspout or buried utility line can change how the well is dug and drained. Point these out at the site visit so digging, drainage and yard repairs are written into the estimate, not discovered later.

How a project introduction works

  1. Describe the basement

New bedroom, more daylight, or a small window to enlarge? Approximate answers are fine.

  2. Note the outside space

Mention a deck, paving, tight access or water collecting near the wall.

  3. Send your details

Share your city, ZIP and timing. We review each enquiry and, if a suitable local provider is available, arrange an introduction. We do not install windows ourselves.

Common questions

What does a complete egress window installation include?

A complete installation usually covers the foundation opening (cut or enlarged), excavation, the window well and any required ladder, a drainage plan, the window itself, sealing and insulation, interior trim, yard restoration and permit handling. Ask each installer which of these their estimate includes.

How do I find an egress window installer in Spokane?

Get written estimates from installers who do the foundation, well and drainage work, not just the window, and check each one with Washington L&I's Verify a Contractor tool. You can also send us your project details and we will look for a suitable local provider.

Is Spokane Egress Windows an installer?

No. We are an independent planning guide and referral service operated by UglyRobot, LLC. Installation, pricing, permits and warranties are agreed directly between you and the provider you choose.

Which areas around Spokane do you cover?

We review enquiries from Spokane and nearby communities. Include your city and ZIP; we cannot promise a suitable provider will be available for every address or timeline.

Can I add an egress window to an unfinished basement?

Yes. An egress window can be added before the basement is finished. Plan the opening, well and drainage first, and tell the permit office if the space will later become a bedroom.
